Tree removal is one of the few home services where price honestly varies tenfold. A small ornamental in a clear yard might be $450. A large oak hanging over a neighbor's roof with crane access required can be $4,000+. Here's what's actually driving the number on your estimate.
The five factors that set the price
1. Size — measured by trunk diameter
Industry uses DBH (diameter at breast height — about 4.5 feet from the ground). Rough Houston-area pricing by DBH:
- Under 12": $400–$700 (small ornamentals, young trees)
- 12–24": $700–$1,500 (mid-sized yard trees)
- 24–36": $1,500–$2,800 (mature live oaks, pecans)
- 36"+: $2,800–$5,000+ (heritage oaks, large pines)
2. Access — how the tree comes down
If we can fell the tree into open ground, work goes fast. If we have to take it down piece by piece because of fences, neighboring structures, or power lines, the cost climbs. Tight-access removals can double the per-tree cost compared to open-yard work.
3. Crane requirement
Some trees can't be safely climbed (dead, structurally compromised, or simply too big for the access available). Crane removal adds $800–$2,500 to the job depending on size and crane reach needed. For trees over 60 feet near structures, a crane is often the safest option — sometimes the only option.
4. Risk and protected species
Trees near power lines, over pools, near gas lines, or with structural defects all add labor and equipment. Protected species (live oak, pecan, magnolia in Sugar Land's ordinance, plus various in independent municipalities like Bellaire and West U) often require permits, which adds time and a small fee.
5. Stump and cleanup
Most quotes include cutting the stump to grade and full debris haul-away. Stump grinding to below grade is typically a separate $150–$500 add-on depending on stump size.
Real Houston-area examples
- Single 30 ft pecan, open yard, Sugar Land: $650 all-in
- 50 ft live oak, near house, climbed sectional, Memorial: $1,800
- Two storm-damaged 60 ft pines, crane work, Kingwood: $4,200 for both, with insurance documentation
- 40 ft pin oak, dead, oak wilt confirmed, Bellaire (with permit): $1,400 + $50 permit fee
What should be included
An honest tree-removal quote should include:
- The takedown itself
- Stump cut to grade
- All wood and brush hauled off-site
- Property protection (lawn boards, fence padding) where needed
- Permit handling for protected species
- Photo documentation if requested for insurance
Watch out for
- Verbal estimates only. Get the price in writing.
- "Fuel surcharge" or "cleanup add-on" surprises. Cleanup should be included.
- Door-to-door tree services after storms. Many are uninsured. Always ask for a Certificate of Insurance before any work.
- Pricing per branch or per hour. Reputable companies quote a fixed price after walking the tree.
Save money the right way
- Bundle multiple trees into one visit. Per-tree cost drops 10–15% on multi-tree jobs.
- Schedule outside hurricane season. July and August have shorter wait times and sometimes lower rates than the post-storm rush.
- Keep firewood if you have a place for it. We'll cut to length and stack it on your property at no charge — saves the haul-away portion of the job.
