How Often Should You Mow Your Lawn in Houston? (Month-by-Month)

Houston's growing season is long and intense. Here's a month-by-month mowing cadence so you cut enough — but never scalp.

Houston has one of the longest growing seasons in the country — grass can put on growth nine or ten months a year. That makes "how often should I mow" a real question, and the answer changes with the season. Here's a month-by-month cadence for a Fort Bend lawn.

The single rule that governs everything: never remove more than one-third of the grass blade in a single mow. Cut more than that and you scalp the lawn — stressing the roots, exposing soil to weeds, and turning it brown. Your mowing frequency should be whatever keeps each cut under that one-third threshold. In peak summer, that means more often than most people think.

Ideal mowing heights

  • St. Augustine: 3–4 inches (go taller in shade).
  • Zoysia: 1.5–2.5 inches.
  • Bermuda: 1–2 inches.

Not sure which grass you have? See our Fort Bend grass guide.

Month by month in Houston

  • March: Growth wakes up. Every 10–14 days as it greens.
  • April–May: Spring surge — move to weekly or every 7–10 days.
  • June–August: Peak. Weekly for most lawns; fast-growing, well-watered Bermuda may want every 5–7 days.
  • September: Still warm and growing — stay weekly.
  • October: Growth slows — back to every 10–14 days.
  • November: Last cuts; every 2–3 weeks as it goes dormant.
  • December–February: Dormant. Little to no mowing — an occasional cleanup pass for leaves and winter weeds.

Signs you're getting it wrong

  • Brown after every mow: you're scalping — mow more often or raise the deck.
  • Clumps of clippings left behind: grass was too tall/wet — cut sooner.
  • Weeds taking over: often a sign of cutting too short, which lets weed seed reach sunlight.

The bottom line

For most Fort Bend lawns, plan on weekly mowing April through September and every other week in spring and fall, tapering off in winter. If keeping up with a summer weekly schedule isn't realistic, that's exactly what a recurring service is for. Still deciding cadence? Read weekly vs. biweekly mowing.
